Born in Toronto in 1990, Abel Makkonen otherwise known as Weeknd has become one of the biggest-selling stars of the 21st Century. Beginning his career in 2010, he did a duo album with Curtis Santiago which he later uploaded to YouTube in the month of December of the same year. The songs 'What You Need', 'Loft Music' and 'The Morning' received a lot of attention online and coverage from a number of media outlets. In 2011, he released his debut mixtape that earned him a nomination for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize. He later went on a tour of Toronto and fortunately for him Drake was also in attendance. After his live performance, Drake approached Weeknd for a potential musical collaboration which they worked on throughout the summer. Since he was not very well known, he chose to refrain as much as possible from participating in any interviews and only did his communication via twitter. In April 2012, he embarked on a tour of the United States and later expanded his tour to Europe while performing at a number of European festivals including the Primavera Sound Festivals in Spain and Portugal and the Wireless Festival in London. Being signed to the Republic Records in a joint venture in 2012 with his own imprint, he released an album entitled ''Trilogy' 'which not only reached number four on the Billboard 200 but also earned him a platinum certification by the RIAA and debuted on the Canadian Albums Chart at number five. In 2013, he did an album titled ''Kiss Land'' that debuted on the Billboard 200 at number two and had sales of over 273,000 copies. From 2016 till date, he has pretty much been doing lots of music with artists such as Kanye West, Beyonce, and Daft Punk. His latest work was in 2017 when he appeared on Future's sixth album on the Track ''Comin out Strong''.
